ESIN, the European Small Islands Federation, functions as the resounding voice for 359,357 islanders spread across 1,640 small islands, tirelessly advocating for their vitality and resilience.

The organization’s mission unfolds on two pivotal fronts:

At the LOCAL LEVEL, ESIN is dedicated to preserving cultural identity and fostering connectivity among small islands

  1. Strengthening cultural identity: ESIN is committed to fortifying the rich cultural tapestry of small islands. The organization firmly believes that by preserving and celebrating cultural diversity, it contributes significantly to the vibrant tapestry of Europe.
  2. Facilitating information exchange: Serving as a vital nexus for information flow among its members, ESIN empowers islands by fostering communication. This, in turn, equips them with the knowledge to navigate challenges and embrace opportunities collectively.
  3. Comparative insights: ESIN provides a platform for members to compare approaches and strategies. Recognizing the distinct challenges each island faces, the organization encourages a collaborative approach that draws on shared knowledge.

On the European Level, ESIN engages in advocacy and policy influence

  1. Informing EU institutions: Acting as an information conduit, ESIN keeps relevant EU institutions well-informed about the unique needs and concerns of small islands, contributing to a more inclusive and informed policy landscape.
  2. Influencing EU policies: Actively engaging with EU policymakers, ESIN works to shape policies and rules that reflect a nuanced understanding of the challenges faced by small islands. Through dedicated advocacy and dialogue, the organization strives to create an environment where the specific needs of small islands are not only acknowledged but also addressed.
