In 2023. we started implementing a project that will establish an informative and educational web portal – a unique platform that will provide quick access to all the information needed to initiate and participate in the energy transition on the Croatian islands.

The focus of the project is energy efficiency, renewable energy sources and the importance of islanders’ participation in the energy transition process itself.

In addition to the above, some of the goals of the project are:

  • to centralize the information needed to initiate and participate in the energy transition on the Croatian islands,
  • to monitor the implementation of the energy transition on the islands and share examples of good practice in order to speed up the overall process and achieve the set goals within the National Plan for Adaptation to Climate Change
  • to educate about the way of implementation and financing of projects that include the use of renewable energy sources
  • to raise the general awareness of the general public about the green transition and the necessity of taking care of energy consumption, water and environmental protection, and the importance of networking all stakeholders
  • to encourage the sustainable economic development of the island and the creation of new green jobs

The importance of the project for the energy transition of the Croatian islands

Recent events and problems in the world on the energy market, triggered by the economic crisis due to the health epidemic and the state of war in the Russian-Ukrainian area, have led to the acceleration of the process in which countries are forced to approach the energy transition and the development of renewable energy sources as soon as possible.

The situation is additionally specific on the islands, which, due to the distance from the energy sources located on the mainland, often remain without power due to breakdowns in the lines, although they are abundant in solar potential, and thus have excellent prerequisites for achieving self-sustainability of the energy system.

Project activities directly contribute to solving detected challenges and needs in the areas of sustainable energy and mobility development and sustainable and inclusive economic development.

This project is a kind of continuation of the project “Leader islands of clean energy” and both projects are financed by the Ministry of Regional Development and European Union funds.
